Local Geography & History

The city of Ocala first came into being during the Second Seminole War, when nearby Fort King became an important strategic point for settlers. In 1846, the city was named the seat of Marion County. By 1847, the town boasted a post office, courthouse and weekly newspaper. Industry in the town grew until the Civil War, when many young men left to fight and the city’s population was reduced to less than 200. Fires in the late 19th century also hampered the city’s growth, but Ocala recovered in the early 20th century and has been known as a center for horse breeding and trade since.

Located in central Florida, the terrain surrounding Ocala is similar to that on the Kentucky Plains. Much of the land surrounding the city is taken up by thoroughbred horse farms. Nearby Silver Springs is the home to an amusement and recreation center and was also one of the earliest developed tourist landmarks in the state. The city is served by four major, national highways, allowing residents easy access to the rest of the eastern seaboard.
